In 1945, Jesse Walters lived the same life as every other ten year old in Georgia. Except for the fact that he played the role of parent and big brother to his three younger siblings most of the time. He often longed for the rare times his family was together and seemed normal. With an absentee father and an alcoholic mother, Jesse tries to hide the truth from his brothers and sister. Playing parent makes life hard on all of the Walters children, but none more than Jesse. After a prolonged absence from his father, Jesse discovers fruit pickers are wanted in Michigan. This new endeavor may be all they need to heal old wounds. Jesse hopes that things will change for the better and that old demons don't follow them across the country.

This is an amazing read. I found myself unable to put it down. It's a great example of Southern fiction. The main character might be young in age, but his struggles are relatable to all ages and I enjoyed reading his story. The best part for me was seeing a picture of the South and rural communities in a time long gone. Also, the fact that it's a good reference to how migrant workers had to literally follow the work around the US to stay alive and keep from starving. They would get shelter and pay, which was enough to allow them to thrive and provide the work that helped the average suburban family keep their food on the table and stocked in stores. Just a good read and although there is darkness to it, I find it accurate to how things were in that era.Product details

Love it! Good read!
Very good. I would recommend it to anyone who likes reading good clean books.
Cherry Colored Summer was such a pleasant read. It was well written and brought me to the 1940's everytime I opened the book. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a charming, heartwarming story.
I loved this book , started it at 900 am and could not put it down , finished at 700 . What a great story ! Can't wait for future books !
A very sweet and sad coming of age story set in the 40s. The author paints a picture of how it really was to be poor in a dysfunctional family of that era. So different from today. Recommended for young people too.
